Title

A cool take on the design of the outdoor space - The heat-resistant city

Date  May 2020

Objectives

How municipalities can gain insight into their heat task and which measures and design guidelines are effective

Location  /geographical coverage

The participating public parties are the municipalities of Amsterdam, Arnhem, Apeldoorn, Beverwijk, Breda, Eindhoven, Groningen, Haarlem, Rheden, Leeuwarden and Tilburg. In addition, two municipal partnerships are affiliated

(RIVUS and BUCH).

Short  summary

In this research they are very busy at the urban level. The measures in public space and buildings and the design guidelines for a sufficiently heat-resistant design of the city are examined.

Impact

In the study they do explain all the consequences of heat in the city, but the adaptation measures in the social field or regarding care or behaviour are not discussed in more detail.

Innovation

There are many ways to look at the problem and how this could be adapted in the city to prevent the problems. Examples are also given of what could be done better in a city/municipality in connection with heat stress.

Lessons learned

They focus on the urban side of the problem. In the research they talk with so many professionals. This is a good way to look at all the aspects of the city.

Sustainability

In this article, they first explain that measures to make a city cooler serve two different purposes:

1) reduce air temperatures citywide and

2) create cool places locally.

Then they present an overview of cooling principles and explain how they affect air and wind chill.

 Replicability  and/or  up-scaling

That can be possible. It is just research of how the city needs to be to prevent the heat waves. It can be more for the caregivers and other.
